There is seriously nothing better than the first real outdoor adventure of summer.
Ready to head out from the parking lot
The weather has been perfect, it finally stopped raining enough for the trails to solidify, and so this past Tuesday we headed out! Kickapoo State Park, although small, is only 30 minutes from our house and the perfect place to escape the concrete.
Handsome little Hiker
Bridger was THRILLED at the idea of going hiking, especially since he got some real-deal hiking boots from Grandpa Thom for his birthday in April. Oh. Man. The hiking boots really sealed the deal, and he might as well have thought they gave him super powers. He probably hiked twice as far with those boots on than he would have otherwise.
Not only was Bridger excited, but I was excited too! This was my first hike with both kids on my own, Bridger on foot and Juni in the pack. She couldn't have been better behaved - she didn't even pull my hair (unlike Bridger at this age!).
Happy Juniper!
And He's Off!
He was galloping along, making sure to tell me all about how to hike properly, diligently pointing out roots and sticks to watch out for, jumping here, running there, stopping to look at spiders and "trees that had been hit by lightning" and...
..THIS:
Oh. Man. Yes. You're seeing that right. We found a tree with a little hole at the bottom with a custom-made door just for little curious minds to discover. We spent the rest of the hike making up a story about a gnome that put that door there.
Stopping for a short rest, showing me his boots.
That story was actually very useful because it ended up distracting Bridger from the fact that he was growing tired and we were still about 1/2 a mile from our car. He was a total champ, though, and we made it back after only one short rest.
Overall we hiked about 2 miles* and had a picnic lunch before heading home.
I loved it. I needed it. It was such a breath of fresh air to go do our own thing in the woods. We really need to do it more often. I plan on making sure that Bridger knows he is a "hiker!" by the end of this summer!
*I probbbbbably pushed him a bit too far for his first hike. You know when you've hiked farther than you have in a while, and when you go to lay down at night your legs are aching? Yeaaah...this Bridger boy...he totally had that. Poor kid. But what. A. Champ! He felt better after a good-night's sleep.
